Councillor's Special Update | June 14th 2024

Tired of congested roads and inadequate transit? Frustrated by long commute times and lack of investment in Orléans South's infrastructure? Concerned about the rapid pace of growth and what that means for moving around our community? So am I, and I am imploring you to participate en masse by filling out the surveys below to demonstrate to City staff how pressing our transportation needs are.

The City has just launched Phase 4 of the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) consultations. This means that you’re invited tell staff the transportation issues you experience first-hand when travelling by car or transit using the two surveys below. Funding and prioritization of projects like the widening of Brian Coburn and the Cumberland bus-rapid transitway will be contemplated and scored against other City projects in this review. The Master Plan will guide infrastructure priority and investment for the next 20 years.

As you know, Orléans South has seen tremendous growth, and I am acutely aware that it is essential to invest in infrastructure projects to support the community's needs. I have been advocating fiercely at every opportunity for increased connectivity in our ward, as I believe the capacity of our current network is past the tipping point. As a result, you face daily challenges with traffic congestion, inadequate public transportation options and limited, unsafe active transportation infrastructure. Advocating for greater connectivity for Ward 19 has become my raison d'être for being on council, and for the past several months, I’ve been meeting with senior staff and the Mayor’s office in advance of updates to our Transportation Master Plan. Now, I need your help. Please take a moment to complete the surveys below and strengthen our case that the time for investment in Ward 19 is now.

Survey #1: Mapping Transportation IssuesThis survey is your chance to pinpoint the exact problems you face when traveling in Ward 19. The survey is available in multiple languages to ensure everyone can participate (see French below):

Survey #2: Transportation Investment Priorities

Once staff understand the issues, they need to know what improvements you think should be prioritized.

The City will host an online virtual engagement on Wednesday, June 26 from 6pm to 8pm. Please register for the event here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctd-CopzwrG9Vbtt_KVGgfzlMVJCp7qAFl

If you are keen to give your feedback in person, TMP staff will be at the François Dupuis Recreation Centre (2263 Portobello Drive) this Tuesday, June 18 from 8 am to 12 pm to hear your feedback. I continue to explore additional in-person opportunities for our community.

This is our chance to make the case for investment in Ward 19, and we can't let the opportunity pass us by!

Also, if you haven’t read my Ottawa Citizen op-ed from TMP Part 1, please take a moment and check it out here:  Kitts: Ottawa’s new transportation plan must not overlook South Orléans

While I always love hearing from you directly, do note that the best way to have your feedback on this issue captured at this time is to fill out the surveys above.

Thank you in advance for your participation!
